Kofa High School senior Megan Nicole Johnston achieved the goal she set out for herself her freshman year: Johnston is valedictorian of her class.
She was nominated by her guidance counselor Gloria Valentin, who wrote "she neither lost her vision nor her dedication to her school work or community involvement in order to achieve any goal she set for herself."
Throughout her high school career, Johnston took all honors and advanced placement courses, Valentin wrote.
Johnston said she enjoys learning about different concepts in the social science field. "I have found that it can be applied to everyday life. The aspect I find most interesting is psychology."
Johnston's extracurricular activities include varsity volleyball, Key Club where she served as president and Academic Decathlon where she was secretary.
Johnston was named Channel 11 student athlete of the week on Oct. 8 and given the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in humanities.
She's the daughter of Duncan and Catherine Johnston.
She plans to attend the University of Arizona full time to pursue a degree in microbiology.
