  Timothy Tiutan says his passion for music motivates him to get out of bed every morning. Evidently, that motivation spills onto others throughout each day.

  He is an excellent student who's ranked No. 11 in his senior class and is concertmaster of the Kofa Orchestra, wrote Kenna Tanaka, orchestra teacher. "Whenever I have to be away from class, I only have to tell the substitute, 'Tim will be in charge.'" 

  Tiutan's academic awards include Mr. Kofa 2008, Arizona Wildcat Excellence Award and Arizona Western College Dean's List. Extracurricular activities include volunteering at Yuma Regional Medical Center, being a member and lifeguard at YMCA and performing at weddings.

  Though music is his passion, his post-graduation plans are to major in physiology at the University of Arizona and to become a pediatrician.

  Cibola High School senior Erik Curiel has been nominated for the Sun Scholar Arts Award 2008.  

  Though he enjoys all aspects of art, what he likes most is completing his pieces and making them as perfect as possible, he wrote in his nomination form.

  After graduation, he plans to attend college to study art, with an emphasis on drawing.  He is the son of Juan Curiel and Patricia Curiel.

  Studying science is preparing Karen Peralta for college and a career in medicine.

  A mature young woman who maintains high academic standards, Peralta has earned the respect Yuma High School faculty, staff and students, wrote Christie McMorris, director of guidance.

  "Not only does she expect the best from herself, she also brings out the best in others around her. She is a leader by example, and her energy and dedication are contagious.

  "With the maturity and motivation that Karen exhibits today, I have no doubt that her future success in the medical field is ensured."

  Peralta's academic awards include Criminal Student of the Month, A-Team and Honor Roll. Volleyball, National Honor Society and Student Council are among her extracurricular activities.

  She plans to attend Arizona Western College, transfer to the University of Arizona, then attend medical school. Her parents are Edith and Manuel Peralta.

San Pasqual Valley High School student Martin Cole is extremely aware of current events, which enables him to analyze situations that often lead to meaningful class discussions, said Georgina Hanna, economics and civics teacher.

  Cole likes social science because is gives him the chance to debate about political views and tactics.

  "He is insightful and highly analytical in his responses,"
Hanna wrote in the nomination letter.

  Cole was recognized as a student of the month this year. As an extracurricular activity, he helps local and out-of-town bands that perform in Yuma shows. He is the son of Ronald and Frankie Cole.

  Cole plans to attend Arizona Western College and take courses to become a television camera operator.

  Ashley Rae LaBar is always willing to help her friends and cheerfully greets new students at school. Her smiles are given freely to everyone, said her English teacher, Robert Qualls.

  It's no wonder the Kofa High School senior was named "Miss Congeniality 2008" in the Miss Yuma County Pageant.

  The language arts award nominee said, "I'm most interested in the expression of human morals and emotions through a written medium."

  LaBar will further her education by attending the University of Arizona in the pursuit of nursing degree.

  At Kofa, LaBar is captain of the cross country team and was ranked sixth in the region. She is also a Relay for Life volunteer and is involved in Dance Club and Yuma Regional Medical Center Junior Volunteer Summer Program.

  She is the daughter of Edward and Grisilda LaBar.
YumaSunGallery > Joshua Syck - Sun Scholar Award 2008: Foreign Language

  The thing Joshua Syck likes most about foreign language is learning something new.

  Syck "works hard to maintain a high grade in German class along with all of his other courses at Yuma High," wrote James L. Kinney, modern language and social studies teacher, in his nomination letter.

  "Not only does he work hard on his assignments, but Joshua also works to promote Germany and its language by volunteering to help those in lower levels of German."

  Not surprisingly, Syck is a member of the German Club. He's also a DECA member and does voluntary sign holding.

  After graduation, he plans to become a German translator or a game art designer. He is the son of Mark and Melissa Syck.

  Antelope Union High School valedictorian J. Mintzmyer enjoys discussing history and politics in class.

  According to his adviser, Jeff Peters, the high school senior is inquisitive, bright and dependable. Mintzmyer keeps himself updated on current events and doesn't hesitate to debate others on the issues, Peters said.

  "Jay appreciates what history can teach us and makes it relevant to his life," Peters wrote in his nomination letter.

  Mintzmyer is in the straight-A Honor Roll and won first place in the FFA state competition for business management. He's been involved in FFA, Student Council and wrestling. He is the son of Charles and Rachelle Mintzmyer.

  Mintzmyer's plan after graduation is to pursue an engineering degree. He has received letters of appointment to West Point, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy as well as an offer of admission to Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Samantha Albert is a respected senior with immeasurable art skills, according to art teacher George Ferguson.

  "She is personable and very well liked by peers, teachers and adults alike," wrote Ferguson in his letter of recommendation.

"It has been my privilege to develop a respectable teacher-student relationship and helping her to achieve her art skills."

  What Albert likes most about her chosen subject field is that she can express her feelings in art, she said. 

   Thought her major is undecided, she plans to attend Arizona Western after graduation. She is the daughter of Tina White.

Donald DeForest enjoys learning about all the agriculture fields that are available.

  That's why the Cibola High School senior plans to pursue a bachelor of science degree in agriculture economics at New Mexico State University after graduating.

  During his high school years, DeForest has been involved in the 4-H program, Cibola FFA Chapter and Arizona High School Rodeo Association. He is also on the A-Team and Cibola's Renaissance Team.

  DeForest is the son of Steven and Mary DeForest.
