  Cole was recognized as a student of the month this year. As an extracurricular activity, he helps local and out-of-town bands that perform in Yuma shows. He is the son of Ronald and Frankie Cole.

  Cole plans to attend Arizona Western College and take courses to become a television camera operator.

  Antelope Union High School valedictorian J. Mintzmyer enjoys discussing history and politics in class.

  According to his adviser, Jeff Peters, the high school senior is inquisitive, bright and dependable. Mintzmyer keeps himself updated on current events and doesn't hesitate to debate others on the issues, Peters said.

  "Jay appreciates what history can teach us and makes it relevant to his life," Peters wrote in his nomination letter.

  Mintzmyer is in the straight-A Honor Roll and won first place in the FFA state competition for business management. He's been involved in FFA, Student Council and wrestling. He is the son of Charles and Rachelle Mintzmyer.

  Mintzmyer's plan after graduation is to pursue an engineering degree. He has received letters of appointment to West Point, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy as well as an offer of admission to Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Jayson Koppinger, a Yuma Catholic High School senior, consistently showed a genuine interest in his American history honors class as well as an avid interest in the world, said Stephen DeDecker, history department chair at YCHS.

  Koppinger said his teachers brought the subject to life in his classes. 

"I enjoyed learning how the past might affect the present and the future," he said.

  DeDecker said Koppinger has achieved academic success through hard work, diligence and dedication.

  Koppinger has been awarded the President's Education Award for outstanding academic excellence and High Honor Roll, AIA Dr. Voie Stuart
Chose Coy Scholar Athlete Award.

  While at Yuma Catholic, Koppinger played football, basketball and baseball at the varsity level, altar served and was a eucharistic minister at the school. He also has volunteered his time at the Yuma Community Food
Bank.

  The son of Pat and Jeannie Koppinger, he plans to attend the University of Arizona to pursue a career in the medical field.

  Analytical in nature, Kiona Yoko Meade has learned to be a risk-taker and spontaneous when an opportunity presents itself.

  The Yuma High School senior was a delegate to Arizona Girls State, a role that may have spurred her interest in political science.

  She was nominated by Christie McMorris, YHS director of guidance, for the social science award. "A person can analyze politics and politicians and yet there is an inherent unpredictable quality that piques Kiona's curiosity," McMorris wrote.

  Describes as being mature beyond her years, Meade is a leader in school and encourages others to reach their own potential, McMorris said.

  Meade was named Criminal of the Month and is a Flinn Scholar nominee, Naval Academy nominee, Pat Tillman Scholarship alternate and ASU Leadership Alternate. She's involved in volleyball and tennis as well as Student Council and Academic Decathlon.

  The daughter of Leila and Lonnie Meade, she plans to attend the University of Arizona and major in an area of biomedical engineering.

Kofa High School senior Megan Nicole Johnston achieved the goal she set out for herself her freshman year: Johnston is valedictorian of her class.

  She was nominated by her guidance counselor Gloria Valentin, who wrote "she neither lost her vision nor her dedication to her school work or community involvement in order to achieve any goal she set for herself."

  Throughout her high school career, Johnston took all honors and advanced placement courses, Valentin wrote.

  Johnston said she enjoys learning about different concepts in the social science field. "I have found that it can be applied to everyday life. The aspect I find most interesting is psychology."

  Johnston's extracurricular activities include varsity volleyball, Key Club where she served as president and Academic Decathlon where she was secretary.

 Johnston was named Channel 11 student athlete of the week on Oct. 8 and given the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in humanities.

She's the daughter of Duncan and Catherine Johnston.

  She plans to attend the University of Arizona full time to pursue a degree in microbiology.

  Janet Diaz, a San Luis High School senior, is described by social studies teacher Erik Randall as a talented and intelligent student who is a leader in the classroom.

  Diaz is one of the most gifted students in written and verbal expression Randall teaches, he wrote in his nomination letter.

  "Janet has proven time and time again that she is truly gifted in  her ability to shape arguments and express herself," Randall wrote.

  According to the teacher, Diaz is a genuine and caring person who puts the same care for individuals as she puts in her school work - a type of dedication that will help her in the pursue of a career in medicine.

  Diaz is involved in the National Honor Society and Family and Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and volunteers at the San Jose Health Clinic. Among the academic awards she's earned are the United States Achievement Academy: Who's Who in Leadership Award, FCCLA Bronze Medal and becoming a member of the SLHS A-Team.

  The daughter of Mercedes and Sergio Diaz, Diaz plans to attend Arizona State University to obtain a degree in biological sciences.

Lynnette Jenkins, a senior at Carpe Diem Collegiate High School, has been nominated for the social science award.

  Jenkins' social studies teacher of six years, Louis Vanhook, nominated her and wrote she is "one educated with knowledge, empowered with character and lastly a student equipped for life."

  Jenkins is president of the Student Council and has been the driving force behind all fundraising projects, Vanhook said.

  Jenkins is also involved in the school's yearbook and photography and is a volunteer of San Luis Utilities. The daughter of Michael and Olivia Jenkins, the student has been given the Student Body President award and "Who's Who Among American High School Students."

  Jenkins plans to attend Arizona Western College, ITT Technical Institute and San Diego State University to pursue a degree in criminal investigative psychology.
